Why i love the NBA playoffs

The playoffs of any sport are always great, but i especially love the NBA’s version. Sometimes they seem like their going on forever, but if you really love the sport of basketball its a beautiful thing to watch. Although my Miami Heat got taken out in the first round of possibly the worst 7 game series in basketball history, there are still many interesting stories happening with the remaining teams. If you watch these teams, the successful ones have have great energy bench play. What i would give to have a bench like Denver that has JR Smith and The Birdman coming in to give a son of life to the team. Just the pure site alone of the Birdman makes people in Denver go insane.

birdman

How can you not love this guy and his story?

Last night i stayed up to watch the first half of the Lakers vs Rockets game and it was a tale of two quarters. The first qtr saw Kobe and the Lakers go off for 45 points in the first 12 minutes to lead the Rockets by 15. In the second quarter just the complete opposite. The Rockets locked down the Lake-show and zoomed back to take a 1 point lead at the half. With a good game in hand i figure i would go to sleep because i couldnt stay up until 1:30 AM to watch the rest. When i woke up this morning i wish i would have. 2 ejections, 2 flagrant fouls, a handfull of technicals, and who lot of bad blood was created last night in the second half. If you havent seen the highlights you should check them out. My favorite without a doubt has got to be Ron Artest when he got elbowed in the neck by Kobe and Artest ran up into his face screaming “You gonna elbow me in the nack again?!?!?!?”

Artest

How could you not be scared out of your mind when hes coming your way? I do appreciate him bringing back the Derrick Mason style hair art. Thats a step in the right direction. Either way it creates great drama. Man i love basketball.

Brandon Roy is so underrated

You look around the league and everyone notices the big 3, LeBron, Wade, and Kobe, are the ultimate game changers. Teams that have these players are only so lucky to understand that they are watching people that will change basketball history and the rest of the league is jealous because of it. But little does the rest of the league realize that their are some other great stars out there that are carrying their young teams to new places. Kevin Durant is a scoring machine and once the rest of the OKC Thunder spend enough time with him to gel they will down the road be a young force. Its time for a shift in the NBA. The Spurs have been on top for so long and its finally looking like the end may be near for them. Its refreshing to see the Hornets, Nuggets, and Trailblazers fighting for home court advantage in the West and its not the same ol’ Spurs, Suns, Lakers match ups.

But the real reason im writing this is because I want to shed some light on Brandon Roy. I dont believe he gets enough credit for what he does out in Portland and the reason is because no one sees their games, except for people in the North West. Their shacked up in their little corner of the country and they majority of their games are at 10:30 PM for anyone on the east coast, and their never nationally televised. When they are on national TV i always try to watch them since I always liked the Blazers back to my days of Idolizing Clyde “the Glyde” Drexler. Last night they were in San Antonio in the early game on ESPN and they dismantled the Spurs on their own court on national TV. Its nice to see Greg Oden finally contributing and growing, but watching Roy is like watching a shadow of what Wade was early in his career. He drives to the basket and looks out of control, but always knows he has the control to put up the shot. Hes got a nice cross-over dribble step back fade away, and he can also pass the ball well. Hes averaging 23.0 points per game, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists this year. He is leading the young Blazers to what could be a home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. I have been saying it for years, watch out for this Blazers team. Their going to be fun to watch.

Roy

Sorry Wade, your FIRED!

from the palm beach post and jose lambiets page 2 blog:

Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade today was fired from his endorsement contract with a chain of charter schools originally named after him and catering to high school dropouts.

Dwyane Wade doing what he does best

Dwyane Wade doing what he does best

Wade, 27, didn’t fulfill his obligations to the D. Wade’s Schools, said Mavericks in Education CEO Mark Thimmig. Those included appearances in TV commercials.

“We need to move on; the dropout rate is at epidemic levels,” Thimmig said. “This contract made Dwyane Wade the biggest celebrity committed to turning around the national dropout crisis.

“He was supposed to participate in marketing campaigns and public appearances, but he has not been engaged.”

Wade received an undisclosed number of shares in the schools when he signed on.

Thimmig said he’ll go on the hunt for another celebrity pitchman, “one with strong family values.”

Thimmig clearly was taking a swipe at the NBA’s leading scorer, who’s been dogged with strange allegations this season. Flash’s soon-to-be-ex-wife accused him of giving her a sexually transmitted disease and abandoning their children. And a former business partner told Page2Live recently that an apartment he rented for Wade was used for sex parties.

Lisa Joseph, the Olympic hero’s publicist, said Wade retained a lawyer to deal with the new ding in his image and didn’t comment.

Wade’s days as schools pitchman seemed numbered. Earlier this year, officials changed the name to Mavericks High Schools instead of D. Wade’s.

The chain is opening its first five schools in Miami-Dade, Pinellas and Osceola counties in August.

Danny Granger set to come back… But dont you miss the old Pacers?

Danny Granger has sat out the last nine games with a torn tendon in his right foot, but he is almost ready to return. He played limited minutes in the All-Star game because he didnt want to hurt himself, but ended up getting hurt anyway. Granger says that he believe he got hurt because he had been overcompensating for soreness in his right knee throughout the season. The Pacers sit only 1 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Bucks for the 8th spot in the east. Not too shabby considering they have been missing their 2 best players, Granger, and guard Mike Dunleavy who has been out most of the year with a knee injury. Dunleavy averaged 19 points a game last year and that is something the Pacers could really used during this playoff race. But nonetheless, they are still within a shot of the 8th spot with their star coming back.

But something about the Pacers has bothered me for the last 5 years. After Reggie Miller retired in 2005 the team just hasnt been the same. For years the Pacers were always a contending team with hot shooting and were fun to watch on the court, especially Reggie Miller. His sharpshooting games against the Knicks during their rivalry in the mid 90’s, and his confrontations with famous Knicks fan Spike Lee made him unforgettable. Reggie’s best moment was during game 1 of the 1995 eastern conference finals where he scored 8 points on the Knicks in the last 5 seconds (2 3 pointers and 2 free throws) to seal the game for the Pacers.

The video doesnt show the 2 free throws, but that is still one of the great moments in NBA history.

Since Reggie Miller’s retirement, the Pacers went through a real rough patch. They fell into mediocrity and then sank even lower when Ron Artest was involved in the famous Rumble at the Palace at Auburn Hills.

Ron Artest Brawl

That one incident set the Pacers back years. It was one of the lowest points for the NBA as a whole. Finally they got rid or Artest and have found themselves a good young player in Granger. We can only be so lucky to have the Pacers back into contention again.

Travis Henry re-writes the Shawn Kemp chronicles

A recent report from the New York Times tabs Former Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry as the new and improved Shawn Kemp. Henry, 30, owes $170,000 annually in child support for his nine children (ages 3-11) and is currently without an he remains under house arrest due to a pending cocaine trafficking charge. He says he cant afford to keep up with child support payments.

“They’ve got my blood; I’ve got to deal with it,” Henry told the Times. “I love all my kids. I’ve lost everything in this mess I’ve gotten myself into.”

Henry said he didn’t plan the children with one exception, and was informed by some of the mothers that they were on birth control however apparently that wasnt the truth.

“I did use protection at first,” Henry said. “Then they’d be saying they’d be on the pill. I was an idiot to trust them. Second or third time with them, I didn’t use it. Then, boom!”

“My counselor asks me, ‘How can you do the same thing over and over?’ Knock on wood, or something, I’m blessed not to have AIDS. That never crossed my mind.”

Unfortunately, the story is about to get worse for Mr. Henry, according to ESPN’s Outside the Lines’, Henry recently became the father of twin girls, upping his total to 11 children with 10 different women.

You may recall the story of former Seattle Super Sonic center Shawn Kemp story which is eerily similar. As of 1998, Kemp had fathered at least seven children all with different women. This number is alleged to be even higher.

Time to invest in some rubbers Mr. Henry.

Zo in a fight with an average “joe”?

Just saw this. Alonzo Mourning was in LA with other former NBA players Ron Harper, Eddie Jones, Antoine Walker, and Robert Horry taping an episode of “Pro’s vs. Joe’s.” Apparently Mourning got in a physical altercation with one of the “Joes” while filming. Good to hear Zo still has that fire.

Mourning

An altercation could mean anything. I had an altercation this morning in the shower trying to open the shampoo bottle because i was still half asleep. Damn you Head and Shoulders!

Zo’s # 33 jersey will be retired March 30th at the American Airlines Arena at halftime against the Orlando Magic.

Wade sticks the daggar in Boston

This is the time of the year when all the bumps and bruises over the course of the season start to catch up with Dwayne Wade. But Wade did it again last night. He got knocked around all game and was saying after that his knee was sore and his ankle was stiff, but no matter, he buried the visiting Celtics in the same end game fashion he has shown over the past 3 weeks.

In the post game interview he said about his injuries “well i was only able to get 32.” Trying not to laugh he let out a big smile. Wade has been in MVP form all season but now its really starting to shine. Nationally he is now being recognized as a true all around player, and a player that has that killer instinct at the end of games. He drained a 3 with a minute left in the 4th to put the Celtics away and the Heat never looked back.

Wade was never a 3 point shooter, but over this year he has developed it into one of his clutch shots. On Monday against the Bulls he drained 3’s at the end of the first half, end of regulation, and that amazing running floating 3 at the end of the 2nd overtime. Last nights game with no different. Now that teams have to play him honestly on the perimeter he can blow by them to the hoop.

Since the All-Star break Wade is averaging 36.5 points and 10.8 assists per game. He also broke his own franchise records for scoring in double figures for the 79th straight game, and tied another team mark with his 20th straight game scoring at least 20 points.

Lets not forget the Celtics were playing shorthanded without starters Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo, and bench players Brian Scalabrine, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, and Tony Allen. Its hard to win when you have so many injuries, but i saw something last night i have never seen before. Mikki Moore had 4 fouls… in the first qtr! And he didnt even start the game!!!

This was a game the Heat needed to stay only 1 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Hawks for 4th place in the East. Boston now falls 2 game behind Cleveland for the top spot.

Tonights Lakers @ Rockets

This is tonights most relevant game in the NBA world. #1 seed Lakers visiting #3 seed Rockets.

Now on the front this seems like a Lakers win, but the Rockets have been playing some great ball lately considering T-Mac went down for the season, traded away Rafer Alston to Orlando, and cut Luther Head. A big reason for the turn around has been Ron Artest. Artest has brought the team mentality back to the Rockets and everyone is buying into it. With T-Mac on the sidelines the offense is now running through center Yao Ming. Historically the offense always ran better through Yao so maybe this is a message to the Rockets. How about trading McGrady to a team that needs a dominant SF/SG for a role player so that Yao can control the tempo. I believe this would be best for them, but good luck finding someone to take on T-Mac’s injury issues. The Rockets are stuck with him.

T-Mac

The Lakers last game was a devastating one in Portland. Not only did they lose to the Blazers, but they also lost Lamar Odom for tonights game due to his one game suspension. Lamar Odom came off the bench during a scuffle after Trevor Ariza knocked Portlands Rudy Fernandez to the ground on a breakaway. The Lakers have lost 3 of their last 5 (all 3 loses have been as a visitor). But never count out Kobe Bryant. He is averaging 34.7 points in his last 6 games against the Rockets and looks like he due for another break out game.

Kobe

My prediction is the Rockets win at home in a statement win and pull closer to the Spurs in the Southwestern division.

Lil Wayne on Wade, the Knicks, and heckling players

I have Heat season tickets and i go to as many games as i can during the year, but every season i Take Hambo to the game to see his beloved Knicks when they are in town. When the Knicks collapsed and Dwayne Wade erupted for yet another stellar performance in front of a packed crowd I was jumping in the air going crazy, while Hambo had his hands in his face in disgust. Although i cannot take credit for the following blog post below, because it is straight from Lil’ Wayne, its only exceptionally great to me and Hambo because we were there to witness it in person:

“First of all, I cannot even begin the blog today without stating a simple fact I have recently come to realize: Dwyane Wade, you are amazing. I was not a believer. You know I’m Kobe all the way to the grave. But to see what Dwyane Wade does on the basketball court, man. It’s shocking on television, but in person it’s unfathomable. Sitting down front row and watching that kid jump over everybody’s head and be such a terrible jump shooter during the whole game but, as soon as it matters, everything he shoots goes in? That’s amazing. I haven’t seen him in the elevator lately, but when I do I’m going to tell him how amazing he is.

And shout out to the Knicks, especially Nate Robinson, Q Richardson, Chris Wilcox and Chris Duhon. ESPN showed me on Sportscenter sitting in the front row with my D-Wade band-aid on, but they didn’t show me heckling those poor Knicks players. I went completely off. My seats are about five rows down from the visitors bench — so they can hear if I sneeze. Well, imagine me up the whole game going crazy like I’ve been a D-Wade fan all my life, yelling stuff like, “This is my house” and, “Get out of Miami.”

Lil Wayne

I was telling Q Richardson, “I remember when you used to play basketball.” Just being horrible in general. Even the girls from the game that didn’t know me and met me later that night were like “Wow, you’re so nice. You were so rude at that game.” That’s how bad I was. Ladies were getting on me for being mean.

Nate Robinson, you are amazing. You can’t say stuff about being short to Nate because he can dunk over you and your mama. Although at one point the other night I saw him lean over to Q-Rich and whisper “Is he on drugs?” because I was getting so into the game. Q-Rich is laughing and I’m like, OK, I am so sober right now it’s not even funny. I will run over there and show you how sober I am. But then again, most sane people would probably look at the average sports fan going nuts at a game and ask if he is on drugs.

Q-Rich: you need to be on a team that will actually let you play because you can actually still play. Duhon: I know where you come from, so to see where you’re at is amazing. You’ve overcome a lot and you are an inspiration. Chris Wilcox: I’ve been a fan since I put a load of money on Maryland when you guys won the national championship. I had a great deal of money riding on that game, and you guys won so I love you, Chris. Don’t even trip. I know I gave you a bad time the other night but I’ve been rocking with you this whole time.”

Oh and in case you did not see the game…this is pretty much how it went

Utah Jazz are on Fire

I dont think anyone outside Salt Lake City has noticed, but the Utah Jazz are on fire with a 12 game win streak. I guess its time to open our eyes a little bit to the Western Conference playoff race. They have moved from the 9th seed all the way to the 4th seed and are only a half game behind the Rockets for the 3rd seed in the West. Where did this come from all of the sudden? Deron Williams has really turned it on and Carlo Boozer coming back has helped even though he hasnt looked like his usual self. Milsap played great in Boozers absence and its really showed in the standings.

Heres a look at today Western Conference:

1 LAL 50-13
2 SAS 43-20
3 HOU 42-23
4 UTH 41-23
5 POR 40-23
6 NOR 39-23
7 DEN 40-25
8 DAL 39-25
9 PHO 34-30

New Orleans has really turned it on as of late too. I believe they are 7-1 since the trade of Tyson Chandler was rescinded, with their only loos coming on the road in Atlanta. But no one has done a better job than Jerry Sloan this year with the Jazz. Through all those injuries he has his players fighting for home court in the playoffs and maybe this year he will finally get that elusive Coach of the Year award.

Danillo…. The Rooster!!!

This one is for my boy Hambo. Leading up to this years NBA draft the 2 of us looked at various mock drafts to see where our favorite teams were going to try to improve. Im a huge Heat fan and Hambo is a huge Knicks fan. Almost every mock draft had the Knicks taking little known Italian Danillo Gallinari. We tried to find videos of his game but it was few and far between. Hambo was hoping they wouldnt take him so that he can get a player he knows already and has seen play. Well on draft night the Knicks do the inevitable and take Danillo. The best part is we learn his nickname is the Rooster!

What could be a better nickname than the Rooster? Ive always wondered why he was given that name… Well the other night we were given a reason…

Ariza’s foul on Fernandez a dirty play

Amid the Dwayne Wade heroics last night, another big story in the NBA was taking place. The Lakers were in Portland taking on the Trailblazers. On a break away Rudy Fernandez was taking the ball to the hoop with Trevor Ariza in tow. Now everyone knows the Fernandez has a great fast break and dunk ability (the reason he was in the dunk contest this year) and he went up high for a mighty slam. As he went up Ariza swiped the back of Fernandez’s head and he went crashing to the floor.

Fernandez laid on the floor for several minutes while his teammates with getting into a scrum with the Lakers. As Brandon Roy went over to talk calmly to Ariza, Trevor went right at him screaming “What? What?” What do you mean “What?” You threw my guy on the floor and tried to take him out. Dont get me wrong, i like the Lakers new approach to hard nosed defense but you dont need to intentionally hurt someone.

Lamar Odom came off the bench so he will be suspended for the Lakers next game. All in all, it was a dirty play by Ariza.

El Heat Are En Fuego as Wade Takes Over!!

Dwyane Wade has long been considered the top of the second tier of NBA Super Stars, however, after seeing him play the Knicks a couple weeks ago, I could not help but marvel in this guys greatness. It is truly rare that we get to see a guy that has the ability to take over a game single handedly and win it for your team. Dwyane has what they the “IT Factor”

He proved it again last night with an unbelievable display that you truly had to see to believe. Wade scored 48 points, 12 assists and 4 steals and I believe there were a couple of blocks in their as well. The man has had an unreal couple of weeks.

Ask the Toronto Raptors. He put up 42 points and eight assists on them Friday, then a day later later scored 25 points, 12 assists and four steals in a loss to James’ Cavs. The week before, he had rallied the Heat from a 16-point deficit against the Knicks by torching them for 46 points — 24 in the fourth quarter. Factor in his 31 points and 16 assists against Detroit on Feb. 24 and his 50 points against Orlando two days before that, and no wonder the league’s top scorer has aroused the interest of the same fan base that ignored him a season ago.

And as much as I am a LeBron fan and look forward to seeing him in a Knicks uniform, I have to give Dwyane Wade my vote for MVP this year. Thats right you heard me. Dwyane Wade MVP!! The measuring stick that I have always used to see who I felt would be MVP would be to remove that player from the team and see how they are without him. Both the Heat and Cavs would be pretty terrible but if you go down the line and the two teams met head to head it would be no contest. Dwayne Wade means more to the Heat the LeBron means to the Cavaliers.

I am not alone in the thought that Wade should be a candidate either….just watch this video courtesy of ESPN.com

Lebron beats the Heat Again with another Triple Double

How amazing is this guy? night after night he just looks far and away the best player on the court and he has only been in the league for 4 yrs. And watching Lebron play Wade, who are arguable 2 of the 3 best players in the entire league, is truly an awesome experience.

Cannot wait until Lebron wears a Knicks jersey in 2010!

UPDATE: ok so I have been advised that it is far from the first time this has been done MY BAD, I still think it is a stupid marketing ploy at a temp for a league with money troubles to get extra flow. You be the judge.
