A new seaon brings new heroes

The MLB season has kicked off earlier this week and for many people this is a joyous occasion. The smell of the fresh cut grass, mid day sunshine during the game, the smell of the hot dogs, or the amazing taste of an arepa (You have to live in South Florida to understand that). For me personally, im not that big of a baseball fan but i will admit that at the beginning of every season i make a conscious effort to root for my home team (The Florida Marlins) and actually try and care about what is happening in baseball. I always get in a fantasy baseball league with old friends of mine every year for money and about 1/4 of the way through every year i just completely lose interest. Well this year im determined to stay (somewhat) interested and at least contend for a money position in my fantasy baseball league. This season brings a new era of stadiums with the Mets and Yankees closing their doors last year to their old storied stadiums and opening this past week in the brand spankin new buildings.

Mets

As i have been watching the past few days with fantasy interest, new seasons bring new heroes, and no one has proved that more than Emilio Bonifacio. In his first game as a Marlin he goes 4/4 with 3 stolen bases, 2 RBI’s, and an inside the park homerun.

He is lightning fast and has a chance to score anytime he is on base. The next game, he almost hit an inside the park homer again! Even though were only 3 games into the season he has provided a new excitement for the Marlins. Well enjoy the opening week of the season and heres to hoping i can keep my interest for more than a few weeks. Bonifacio has given me a reason to watch some games and keep my interest. We all know why Billy the Marlin keeps going.

Team USA adds star 3b

After being reduced to only one bench player during the World baseball Classic, team usa according to espn.com has added star 3b Evan Longoria.

Third baseman Evan Longoria will be joining Team USA, according to Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman.

The great one although not a baseball fan does keep his eye on the sport and thinks this is a good move. He will add some pop off the bench as well as give them an option behind mets 3b David Wright. USA USA USA

WBC – Dominican Republic goes down

Now i dont usually get into baseball, but there was one pretty big moment last night if you are a baseball fan. As Hambo and i were taking about last night he told me the Netherlands beat the Dominican Republic. I told him it had happened a few days ago and he said are you sure? Well it turns out we were both right. The World Baseball Classic is a 2 loss elimination tournament where the Dom Rep were oneof the favorites to win outright. Well they lost to the Netherlands….. Twice.

Let me break down how big of an upset this is:

Current MLB players: DOM REP 23, Netherlands 2
2008 MLB All-Stars: DOM REP 4, Netherlands 0
Career MLB pitching wins: DOM REP 518, Netherlands 95*
Career MLB homeruns: DOM REP 1,801, Netherlands 82
2008 MLB Salaries: DOM REP $83.4 million, Netherlands $0.4 million
*Note that 90 of the pitching wins come from one person Sidney Ponson.

Losing one to an inferior team, fine, you can just say your heads were in the game and it was the first game of the tournament. But to lose twice? to the same inferior team? The Netherlands second win came in the bottom of the 11th last night. Thats a huge upset worth mentioning.

Selig: “Baseball is clean and I’m proud”

As those ugly rubber shoes tagline goes…WHAT A CROC! The man that is now taking credit for cleaning up the game only after the congressional hearings that pointed out how Selig himself and his cronies turned their back on steroid use for so long that it actually allowed it to grow to the level that was unthinkable. If Selig thinks that his name should not go hand in hand with the “Steroid Era” he is out of his damn mind!

A-Rod to have surgery

As I expected, A-Rod went against the Yankees wishes to play with the hip injury and opted for surgery that will put him out of commission for 4-6 weeks.

As stated in an earlier post, this is A-Rods way of hiding from the press. It remains to be seen how A-Rod’s mindset is when he returns to the game.

Alex Rodriguez To Use Surgery To Escape The Press

According to ESPN.com, A-Rod will undergo surgery on his torn labrum, even though the Yankees dont feel it is necessary. This tells me that he could be pulling the good ole stay indoors until its sunny again routine. A-Rod has been well publicized as a person who is extremely interested in what you (the fans and media) think of him, so I find it sort of odd timing that now in the midst of (at least in ESPN’s mind) the biggest scandal to ever rock baseball. It really is sad if you ask me. The guy is clearly ignorant and when it comes time to face up to his mistakes his crawls under a rock sucking his thumb.

I personally have no problem with any of the athletes taking steroids because I feel this sport would be dead right now had McGuire and Sosa gone on that history homerun chase. A lot of people tend to forget that while they are busy bashing them. I do however feel that people like McGuire who continue to this day refuse to admit that they took anything. Its a joke!

No. I am not telling everyone they should run out and take steroids (Don’t do drugs kids!)

But what I am saying is these guys saved one of the most boring American sports on the planet from completely collapsing by captivating our imaginations again.

Now that I went completely away from the original subject of A-Rod, I would like to publicly extend my best wishes to him, and just say that he needs to hire better people and if he would like to pay me for advise, I’d be more than happy to help him out.
